Fergusons

One of the strangest "sights" I have ever been privy to is this recreation of the 1906 Colombo City Counsel meeting. Complete with dummies. Ghastly old dummies. And Fergusons!!!!

We exited our hole-in-the-wall biriyani joint into a Colombo rainy season deluge. As we passed the old muni building we were captured by Fergusons, those Self-appointed guides who lurk about and latch onto you so you won't miss anything. In this case we didn't miss the glories of the city council meeting of 1906.

What the hell, it was mostly dry in the old colonial ruin and it was certainly at an 11 on the weirdness dial. Our two Fergusons showed us about the dilapidated structure complete with the moldering manikins that sat in the very chairs used in the meeting of 1906. We had to sign the register and pose for pictures. Then came the shake down for the guiding "services". I forked over 100 rupees in good faith and we beat feet down the ancient stairs while the Fergies argued about how to split the 100 note and probably about what a cheap git I am.

Believe me, 100 rupees was fifty too many.

Back on our crowded little train, we returned to Mt Lavinia and washed away the sweat of the day.
